Welcome to our weekly Bible memory verse. I've decided to include it as a blog so we can dig into the verses a bit more. Our verse for this week comes from Hebrews and speaks volumes about the importance of faith and the role it plays in our relationship with God.
Without faith it is impossible to be well pleasing to him, for he who comes to God must believe that he exists, and that he is a rewarder of those who seek him.
Hebrews 11:6
The following is an excerpt from a book by Jeremiah Burroughs called Faith.
(I will link it at the bottom of this post)
You think that if you have good meanings and good desires, and you are sorry for what you have done, and you come to church and hear the Word, and are just in your dealings with men (and the like), that this will suffice; but this does not please God without faith.
Do not tell me what you do, but rather tell me the principle by which you do these things. You may live better than you have done. There may be many things in your actions that you have mended; but yet if your state and condition are not changed by being brought into Jesus Christ, that which you do is not accepted. But faith puts an acceptance upon what we do.
Luther had such an expression concerning faith (he who had so much himself, and therefore admired it so much the more): "The actions of the poorest milkmaid, the poorest servant, are more glorious than all that Alexander or Julius Caesar, or those famous conquerors who conquered almost all the world. The actions of the poorest servant in but milking a cow or sweeping a house are more honorable in the eyes of God than those were, if these servants are believers, and do what they do out of faith. It is more honorable because it is out of faith."
For faith not only sets the soul to work to close with God, but sets it on work to perform all things and your duties are accepted by God, and they are a sweet sa-vour in the nostrils of God. That broken prayer of yours, though you are not able in words to express yourself but by breathing and panting out your heart to God, coming from faith, is more accepted than all the glorious works that all the hypocrites in the world do or possibly can do. It is faith that brings acceptance not only to our persons, but to our actions. It ingratiates a person and his duties at the throne of God; and that's a precious grace.
